Brazil Sees G20 Presidency as Diplomatic 'World Cup'

Country prepares to preside over a group of industrialized and emerging nations next year

Brazilian diplomacy has been treating the rotating presidency of the G20, which will be assigned to the country next year, as a kind of "World Cup". The group brings together industrialized and emerging nations.

The idea is to have a whole year of summit events in various areas, culminating with the meeting of the heads of state in December, after the US election.

There should be thematic meetings on the economy, environment and new technologies, for example, in different cities of the country.

An inter-ministerial working group should be created soon. There is still no major theme defined for the Brazilian presidency, but it should relate to two priorities of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's government, the green economy and the fight against inequality.

Last week, Brazil invited Paraguay and Uruguay to participate in the country's presidency of the G20. Argentina, another Mercosul partner, is already a member of the group.
