Detention of 42 Brazilians in Mexico Exposes New Irregular Immigration Route

Yucatán, a state located on the homologous peninsula, sees increasing apprehension of migrants seeking the USA as their final destination

Brazilians are part of an irregular migration route in Mexico that has drawn the attention of authorities for gaining prominence, especially after the period of the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused migratory flows to drop.

Last Monday (24), the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of the country, destination of immigrants who wish to enter the US, reported that 42 Brazilian immigrants in an irregular situation —that is, without the necessary documentation—, had been detained in the state of Yucatán, bathed by the Caribbean Sea.

The group was detained in a pickup truck in the town of Maxcanú. There were 32 adults (16 men and 16 women) and ten minors. The case is not an isolated one. On the last 14th, nine more Brazilians, two of them children, were also detained in Yucatán.
