Murder Rate Spikes in Ceará State as Police Strike

Governor Camilo Santana (PT) says amnesty to police officers who were part of a riot is out of the question

The total number of deaths registered in Ceará has reached 170 in less than a week after some members of the military police began a strike.

According to data released on Tuesday (25) by the government of Ceará, 23 murders were registered on Monday alone, adding to the 147 counted until the previous day.

Last year there were 164 deaths in all of February in Ceará. In February, there are already 309 homicides in Ceará.

The military police strike began on the 19th. The day before, there were five violent crimes, and on the 17th, three. The daily average jumped to 28 since the beginning of the strike, or more than one death per hour.

Governor Camilo Santana (PT) said that amnesty is out of the question of amnesty officers identified as participating in the mutiny - 167 military police officers suspected of being part of the strike have been removed from office. They will have to return their weapons, handcuffs, and badges.
