Brazil's Senate Launches an Investigation into President Jair Bolsonaro's Handling of The Covid-19 Pandemic

Senate will also investigate transfer of funds to states and cities in federal pandemic investigation

Brasília

The President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (DEM-MG), made the creation of the commission that will investigate Bolsonaro’s handling of the pandemic official this Tuesday (13th) .

Pacheco decided to unite two requirements presented by senators, creating a single commission that, in addition to investigating the administration of President Jair Bolsonaro, will also deal with transfers of federal funds to states and municipalities.

The initial request, authored by Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP), provided only for the investigation of the actions and omissions of the federal government in facing the pandemic, in particular addressing the collapse of the health care system in Manaus (AM).

In recent days, however, government leaders and benches have signed another proposal, by Senator Eduardo Girão (Pode-CE), which also intended to involve states and municipalities. This was a request from President Bolsonaro.

The request came five days after the decision of the Supreme Court justice Luís Roberto Barroso, who forced Pacheco to create the CPI.

The plenary of the Supreme Court will analyze the issue on Wednesday (14), allowing for the confirmation or rejection of Barroso's monocratic decision.

Pacheco's reading of the application means that the commission was created. However, it does not mean its immediate installation.
